Can CHC33021 Fit Around Full-Time Work?

Possibly—but flexible theory is only one part of the course. Your employment roster, study timetable and 120 workplace hours must all fit.

Start with the realistic answer

Yes, some people study CHC33021 while working—but flexibility must be proven

A course described as part-time, blended or online may still include fixed attendance, practical assessment and workplace hours.

CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support contains 15 units and requires candidates to complete at least 120 hours of work.

Those hours sit alongside classes, independent study, written assessments, practical demonstrations, trainer meetings, travel, screening, induction and possible assessment resubmissions.

The question is therefore not simply, “Can I study online after work?” The better question is:

“Can this provider’s complete delivery and workplace schedule fit around my actual job, caring responsibilities and available leave?”

The three-calendar test

A workable course needs more than evening classes

Place your work roster, the complete provider timetable and the proposed workplace schedule beside each other before making an enrolment decision.

01

Your employment calendar

Start with the hours you cannot easily change: rostered shifts, commute, overtime expectations, peak work periods and notice required for leave.

A regular Monday-to-Friday role creates different challenges from rotating shifts, night work or a roster issued only a few weeks ahead.

02

Your course calendar

Ask for scheduled class times, compulsory workshops, assessment observations, trainer availability, due dates and any daytime attendance.

“Online” can describe where theory is accessed without explaining every activity required for completion.

03

Your workplace calendar

A host workplace must have suitable activity, supervision and assessment access when you are available.

Evening or weekend placement should never be assumed. The provider and workplace must confirm what is genuinely available.

Compare realistic arrangements

Four ways working students may approach the course

These are planning examples, not provider promises. The actual arrangement must be confirmed before enrolment.

Swipe horizontally on smaller screens to view the complete planning table.
Possible model What may make it workable What must be confirmed
Full-time work with evening theory Theory is available outside working hours and the student can reserve annual leave or negotiate temporary flexibility for workplace attendance. Whether all compulsory sessions are outside work hours and whether placement can be scheduled within the available leave period.
Rotating shift work The employer releases rosters early and the provider allows movement between suitable class or assessment times. Attendance rules, notice required for changes and whether the placement workplace accepts rotating availability.
Part-time employment One or more regular weekdays remain available for classes, assessment and workplace participation. Whether the provider can use those consistent days throughout the relevant course stages.
Existing relevant employment or traineeship The workplace, duties, supervision and formal training arrangements may support course requirements. Provider approval, employer participation, suitable duties, assessment access and any required training contract.
Do not underestimate independent study

A part-time timetable does not mean a part-time commitment every week

Providers can structure CHC33021 differently. The number of classroom or online sessions shown on a timetable may not represent the complete weekly workload.

Your personal plan should also allow for:

  • Reading and online learning activities
  • Written assessments and corrections
  • Practical demonstrations or simulations
  • Trainer meetings and learner-support appointments
  • Travel to classes or workplace locations
  • Screening, induction and placement documentation
  • Childcare or alternative care arrangements
  • Recovery time when combining work, study and practical care duties

Ask the provider for an example of a demanding week, not only an average week. That can reveal assessment clusters, compulsory workshops or workplace periods that are not obvious in the course advertisement.

The part that usually needs the most planning

The 120 hours must fit a real workplace—not only your personal calendar

120 Minimum hours of work required for CHC33021.

A provider may organise the hours in blocks, regular weekly days or another approved structure. You should not assume that the hours can be completed entirely at night, on weekends or during dates chosen by the student.

ASQA advises students to check whether a provider arranges work placement or expects the student to secure it. ASQA has also identified placement availability and unclear responsibility as risks that can delay student progression or completion.

Who finds the workplace?

Ask whether the provider arranges it, assists you or expects you to find it.

Which days are normally available?

Ask for actual examples—not only a statement that placement is flexible.

Can existing employment count?

The provider must assess whether the workplace, duties, supervision and evidence are suitable.

What happens after a delay?

Ask how the provider handles unavailable hosts, missed days and assessment rescheduling.

Is placement paid?

Do not build your budget on an assumption

A vocational placement that meets the requirements of the Fair Work Act can lawfully be unpaid. Where the arrangement does not meet the vocational-placement criteria, the student and host may need to consider whether an employment relationship exists.

A student completing requirements through existing employment or a formal traineeship may be in a different position from a student attending a separate unpaid vocational placement.

Before enrolling, ask the provider to explain:

  • Whether the expected arrangement is paid or unpaid
  • Whether your existing job could be assessed
  • Whether a traineeship option is genuinely available
  • Who pays for screening, travel, uniforms or equipment
  • Whether leave from your current job may be needed

The provider cannot determine your employer’s leave approval. Discuss any proposed absence with your employer separately and avoid resigning or reducing hours until the course arrangement is clear.

Test your own situation

Which working-student scenario sounds closest to yours?

Monday-to-Friday employee

Your main issue may be placement access

Evening theory may be manageable, but the available aged-care workplace could operate its student program mainly during weekdays. Ask whether block placement is available and calculate how much leave would be needed.

Night or rotating shift worker

Fatigue and roster notice matter

Avoid planning a full workplace day immediately after a night shift. Confirm when rosters are published and whether the provider can accommodate changes without affecting attendance or progression.

Parent or family carer

Plan care around the least-flexible requirement

Theory may be completed after children are asleep, but practical attendance cannot usually be paused in the same way. Ask for expected start and finish times before arranging childcare.

Existing support worker

Ask for a formal workplace assessment

Do not assume your employment automatically satisfies the qualification. The provider must confirm suitable duties, supervision, access to evidence and whether credit transfer or recognition may apply.

Ask before paying

Ten questions that reveal whether “flexible” is genuinely flexible

Which sessions are compulsory?

Request exact days, times and locations for classes, workshops and assessments.

Are sessions recorded?

Recorded theory does not automatically replace compulsory participation or assessment.

How much notice is given?

Ask when timetables, placement dates and changes are normally communicated.

Who arranges placement?

Confirm the provider’s responsibility and the student’s responsibility in writing.

Can placement occur in blocks?

This may affect whether annual leave or temporary reduced hours could work.

Are evenings or weekends available?

Ask for actual host availability rather than a general possibility.

What is a demanding study week?

Request an example including classes, assessments and independent work.

What happens after a missed day?

Check attendance rules, make-up arrangements and possible additional costs.

What support is available?

Ask how and when working students can contact trainers or access learning support.

What is the realistic finish date?

Confirm whether the advertised duration includes placement access and assessment completion.

Cost and funding planning

Free TAFE does not remove the time or income question

The Victorian Skills Gateway currently marks CHC33021 for Skills First, Free TAFE and traineeship delivery.

Personal eligibility, provider participation, funded-place availability and course costs must still be confirmed. Skills First also applies limits to subsidised study, subject to current exceptions and rules.

Even where tuition is covered, a working student may still need to budget for:

  • Reduced earnings or leave during workplace attendance
  • Travel, parking or public transport
  • Screening, uniforms or equipment
  • Childcare or replacement caring arrangements
  • Internet, technology or study materials
  • Provider-specific student-service or materials charges
!

A Free TAFE listing is not personal funding approval. The provider must assess eligibility, confirm a funded place and disclose all charges before enrolment.

Questions working students ask

Frequently asked questions

Can I complete CHC33021 while working full-time?

It may be possible where classes, assessments and workplace hours fit your employment roster. There is no universal timetable applying to every provider, so request the complete schedule and placement process before enrolling.

Can I complete all 120 hours on weekends?

Do not assume this. Weekend availability depends on the provider, host workplace, suitable activities, supervision and assessment access.

Can I take annual leave to complete placement?

Some students may use approved leave, but your employer controls leave approval and the provider controls the course arrangement. Confirm placement dates before relying on annual leave.

Can my current job count toward the 120 hours?

It may be possible when the workplace, duties, supervision and evidence satisfy the provider’s requirements. The provider must formally assess and approve the arrangement.

Is CHC33021 available online?

Some providers may deliver theory online or through blended study. The qualification still requires practical assessment and at least 120 hours of work.

Is work placement paid?

A vocational placement meeting the Fair Work Act criteria can lawfully be unpaid. Existing employment and formal traineeship arrangements may operate differently. Confirm your proposed arrangement before enrolling.

Is CHC33021 available through Free TAFE?

It is currently marked as a Free TAFE course in Victoria. Personal eligibility, funded places, provider participation and additional costs still require confirmation.

What if I am already enrolled and cannot fit in placement?

Ask your provider for its placement process, your responsibilities and available alternatives in writing. You can also use Pathway Select Placement Help to prepare the situation for review, although Pathway Select cannot guarantee a placement.
