CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support requires candidates to complete at least 120 hours of work.
Those hours are not a small activity added at the end of the course. They form part of demonstrating that you can apply your learning in an appropriate support environment.
One hundred and twenty hours is equivalent to about three standard 40-hour working weeks. That comparison shows the size of the commitment, but it does not mean every provider schedules placement as one continuous three-week block.
Placement may be delivered in blocks, spread across several days each week, completed through an approved existing workplace, or organised through another provider-approved structure.
What is CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support?
Training.gov.au describes CHC33021 as a qualification for people providing person-centred support in community, home or residential-care settings while working under supervision and delegation.
It is commonly considered by people interested in aged care, disability support or a broader individual-support pathway.
The qualification contains 15 units: 9 core units and 6 elective units.
The elective package matters. Two providers may offer the same qualification code while packaging different electives or different specialisation directions.
Before choosing a provider, request the complete unit list and confirm whether the course is designed around ageing, disability, a combined ageing-and-disability direction or another approved individual-support outcome.
What “at least 120 hours of work” actually involves
The 120 hours are not simply optional observation time. The work requirement supports the assessment of practical competency in an appropriate workplace context.
Placement preparation
Your provider may need to confirm workplace suitability, screening documents, learner readiness, induction requirements and available supervision.
Workplace attendance
Your hours may occur in a continuous block or across a longer period. The provider and host workplace determine the practical schedule.
Evidence and assessment
Attendance alone may not complete the requirement. The provider must explain how activities, supervision and workplace evidence will be recorded.
The minimum hours are not the complete workload
Placement sits alongside classes, independent study, written assessments, practical demonstrations, travel, induction, paperwork and possible assessment resubmissions.
You may have room in your calendar for 120 hours but still struggle if you have not allowed for transport, childcare, changing work shifts, screening delays or unpaid time away from regular employment.
Online theory does not remove workplace attendance
Some providers may deliver theory online. That does not make the complete qualification remote. Workplace participation and practical assessment must still be completed through an arrangement accepted by the provider.
Who may be suited to this pathway?
Interest in helping people is valuable, but the work also requires reliability, communication, respectful boundaries and comfort with practical support responsibilities.
It may suit you when:
- You want an entry-level individual-support pathway
- You are comfortable learning through practical experience
- You can communicate respectfully with different people
- You can follow procedures and accept supervision
- You have a realistic placement plan
- You understand the nature of direct support work
Investigate carefully when:
- You cannot take time away from current employment
- You require placement only in evenings or weekends
- You have limited transport or childcare options
- You expect the entire course to be completed from home
- You need guaranteed employment after completion
- You are relying on funding that is not confirmed
Entry and placement-readiness checks vary
A provider may assess language, literacy, numeracy and digital skills before enrolment.
Depending on the workplace and duties, students may also need identity documents, screening, induction or health-related evidence before placement begins.
Ask for a written placement-readiness checklist that applies to the actual course and intended placement setting.
How long does CHC33021 take?
There is no universal student duration applying to every CHC33021 provider.
Delivery length can vary according to class frequency, study mode, learner needs, assessment design and placement scheduling.
When a provider advertises a duration, ask whether the estimate includes:
- The complete 120-hour work requirement
- Waiting time before placement starts
- Induction and document processing
- Assessment marking and resubmission time
- Term breaks and public holidays
- Additional learner support
The shortest advertised course is not automatically the strongest option. A realistic timetable and clear placement process may be more important than a fast completion claim.
Could CHC33021 be available through Free TAFE?
As reviewed on 27 July 2026, the Victorian Government lists Certificate III in Individual Support within the Free TAFE nursing and personal-care priority pathway.
Eligible students may have tuition fees covered. Other costs such as books, equipment, uniforms, screening or transport may still apply.
Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents and New Zealand citizens training in Victoria are generally included in the stated residential-status eligibility. Separate support may apply to eligible asylum seekers.
Skills First also applies course limits, subject to current program rules and exceptions.
