CHC33021 Ageing, Disability or Both? Choose the Right Specialisation Before You Enrol
The qualification code can be identical while the elective package changes your sector focus. Check the six electives before choosing the provider.

CHC33021 is one qualification—but the specialisation can change
Every compliant CHC33021 course contains nine core units and six electives.
The nine core units establish common individual-support capability: person-centred support, empowerment, independence and wellbeing, healthy body systems, communication, diversity, legal and ethical practice, infection prevention and safe direct care.
The six elective positions are where the provider can create a particular vocational focus.
National packaging rules identify three named specialisations:
- Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing)
- Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability)
- Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing and Disability)
That means two students can both say “I studied CHC33021” while having materially different elective transcripts.
What changes when you choose Ageing, Disability or both?

A course advertisement that says only “CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support” does not tell you whether all three Ageing units, all three Disability units or both groups are included.
Choosing both gives breadth—but uses every elective
The combined Ageing and Disability specialisation is attractive when you want exposure to both sectors.
But “more specialisations” does not automatically mean “more useful for every student”.
Single-sector specialisation
Three mandatory specialist electives are used, leaving three elective positions for other units permitted by the packaging rules.
Depending on provider availability, those remaining electives could add skills relevant to another part of your intended work.
Combined specialisation
All three Ageing and all three Disability units must be selected.
That fills the complete six-unit elective component of CHC33021.
The national elective list extends beyond Ageing and Disability
Provider availability varies. The examples below are nationally listed CHC33021 electives, not promises that a particular RTO will offer them.
This is why a provider's actual package matters. A single-sector specialisation may give the provider more room to build a particular occupational emphasis around the remaining three elective positions.
Which situation sounds most like yours?
Ageing is the most directly aligned named specialisation
Its mandatory specialist units cover aged-care practice, dementia and palliative approaches.
Ask the provider which three additional electives it uses and whether they support the settings or employers you are considering.
Disability is the clearer named specialisation
The mandatory Disability units focus on strengths-based development, participation and inclusion, and working effectively in disability support.
This specialisation also matters if you may later investigate CHC43121 Certificate IV in Disability Support.
The combined package may give useful breadth
You receive all six specialist units across Ageing and Disability.
Make the choice knowingly: because all six electives are used, you are giving up the ability to include other Group C elective options inside this qualification package.
Do not choose “both” only because it sounds safer
Compare the actual work environments, role expectations, workplace assessment arrangements and future study pathways first.
A focused course with carefully chosen electives may be more useful than a broader package selected without a clear reason.
Make the Disability outcome explicit before enrolment
CHC43121 currently names CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability) as an accepted entry pathway.
Ask the provider to confirm the exact qualification title and transcript you will receive rather than assuming the base CHC33021 code is enough.
Your Certificate III package can matter when you progress
Students often choose electives based only on the first job they want.
It is worth also checking the entry rules of the qualification you may want next.
CHC33021 Disability
Provides a Certificate III outcome containing all three Disability specialist units.
Ask the provider to confirm the exact specialisation shown on your qualification documentation.
CHC43121 Disability Support
The current national entry requirements specifically list CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability).
Admission and provider-specific requirements still require formal confirmation.
If you already hold CHC33021 without the Disability specialisation, do not assume that your qualification automatically satisfies CHC43121 entry. Give the provider your certificate and complete statement of attainment for assessment.
Every CHC33021 pathway requires at least 120 hours of work
Choosing Ageing, Disability or both does not remove the national 120-hour requirement.
The provider must explain how your workplace experience and practical assessment will cover the requirements of the units in your actual package.
Ask which workplace settings are used for your particular specialisation and whether one setting can provide all required assessment opportunities.
Ask how the provider ensures you can demonstrate both the Ageing and Disability specialist units in appropriate contexts.
Existing employment may be usable where the provider approves the setting, duties, supervision and assessment access.
Online theory does not remove the requirement for real workplace learning and valid practical assessment.
Six assumptions that can leave you with the wrong package
The nine core units are common, but providers can package the six electives differently within the national rules.
It remains a 15-unit qualification. The combined specialisation uses all six available elective positions.
Breadth can be valuable, but the combined package leaves no elective position for other nationally available CHC33021 electives.
The current Certificate IV entry rules specifically name the Disability specialisation. Your provider must inspect your qualification and transcript.
Victorian guidance says elective availability varies depending on the selected provider.
Employers can consider qualifications alongside screening, experience, availability, role duties and individual suitability.
Is CHC33021 currently available through Free TAFE?
The Victorian Skills Gateway currently marks CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support for Skills First, Free TAFE and traineeship delivery.
It also notes that elective availability may vary by training provider.
That means funding status and specialisation availability are two separate questions.
A provider may participate in government-funded CHC33021 delivery while offering only a particular elective package or specialisation.
Personal eligibility, funded-place availability, additional charges, provider admission and delivery arrangements must also be confirmed before enrolment.
Do not ask only, “Is CHC33021 Free TAFE?” Also ask, “Which six electives will I actually study, and what specialisation will appear on my qualification?”
