CHC30121 or CHC30125? Check the Childcare Course Code Before You Enrol
The childcare qualification has changed. Confirm the code, transition plan and 160-hour placement process before you enrol.

CHC30125 is the current Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care
CHC30125 supersedes and is nationally equivalent to CHC30121.
The change does not mean that every student previously enrolled in CHC30121 has completed an invalid course. It means the national training product has been updated and providers must manage enrolment and transition arrangements correctly.
A student considering a new enrolment should expect the provider to explain why it is offering a particular code, whether that code is current, what transition arrangements apply and which qualification will be issued after successful completion.
Do not rely only on the course title. “Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care” can appear beside either code, even though the national status of the codes is different.
The course names look the same, but their national status is different
The previous qualification
CHC30121 was the earlier Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care.
It has been superseded by CHC30125 and is recorded as nationally equivalent to the new qualification.

The current qualification
CHC30125 is the current Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care.
It reflects work performed by educators supporting children’s wellbeing, learning and development in regulated Australian education and care services.

The qualification was updated—not erased
CHC30121
Existing students may have commenced under this qualification before the replacement took effect.
Their provider should communicate whether they will complete the existing qualification or transition into the replacement.
CHC30125
New students should be shown the current course status and told exactly which national qualification will appear on completion documents.
The provider must still be registered to deliver the code being offered.
Do not accept “it is basically the same course” as the complete answer
“Which qualification code will I be enrolled in, why are you offering that code, and which code will appear on my certificate when I complete?”
Request the answer in writing together with the course information, unit list, transition explanation, fees, refund terms and placement responsibilities.
A clear provider should be able to explain the qualification status without avoiding the question or pressuring you to enrol immediately.
CHC30125 requires at least 160 hours in a regulated service
The workplace component is not an optional extra and it cannot be replaced by completing theory online.
The required hours must be completed in a regulated children’s education and care service in Australia. The hours may be applied collectively across units that contain workplace-hour requirements.
Find out who secures the placement
Ask whether the provider arranges a host, actively assists you or expects you to find a regulated service independently.
Confirm when the hours begin
Ask whether placement starts early, occurs in blocks or is spread through the course—and whether the advertised duration includes possible placement waiting time.
Prepare for child-related work requirements
A Victorian Working with Children Check may be needed before placement or work involving children. Confirm the exact screening and identity requirements with the provider and host service.
Understand how workplace competency is observed
Ask which activities must be demonstrated, who conducts observations, what evidence the service must provide and what happens if an assessment needs to be repeated.
“Online course” does not mean “complete from home”
A provider may deliver knowledge content online, but practical skills still need to be demonstrated under the required workplace conditions.
Before paying, compare the flexibility of the theory with the reality of travel, service operating hours, family commitments, screening, supervision and unpaid placement time.
Six answers that should make you slow down
The code identifies the national qualification and its current status. The provider should explain it clearly.
CHC30125 includes at least 160 hours in a regulated Australian education and care service.
Placement responsibility, timing and support should be understood before enrolment.
Tuition may be covered for eligible students while screening, materials, services, travel or other costs can remain.
A qualification does not control an employer’s recruitment, screening or suitability decision.
Pressure is not a substitute for transparent course, fee, placement and refund information.
Is CHC30125 available through Free TAFE?
The Victorian Skills Gateway currently marks CHC30125 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care for Skills First and Free TAFE.
Eligible students may have tuition fees covered, but personal eligibility and the availability of a funded place must be assessed by the provider.
Other costs may include student services, materials, screening, first-aid-related requirements, travel, placement clothing or provider-specific charges.
A provider displaying CHC30121 may also appear in Victorian course information during the transition period. Confirm the code, intake, funding arrangement and certificate outcome that apply to your specific enrolment.
A Free TAFE course listing is not personal approval. The provider must assess your eligibility, confirm a funded place and disclose every fee before enrolment.
CHC30125 has no national entry prerequisite—but readiness still matters
The national qualification does not require a previous certificate or a defined period of employment before entry.
That does not mean every applicant will be accepted automatically or that the course suits every student.
A provider may assess language, literacy, numeracy, digital capability, prior learning and general suitability through a pre-training review.
You should also consider whether you can:
- Communicate respectfully with children, families and colleagues
- Follow strict child-safety, privacy and reporting obligations
- Complete practical tasks involving babies, toddlers and young children
- Attend placement during the operating hours available to the host service
- Obtain the screening required for child-related work
- Manage written assessments, observations and workplace evidence

Frequently asked questions
Is CHC30121 still the current childcare qualification?
No. CHC30121 has been superseded by CHC30125. Government and provider pages may still show CHC30121 while transition arrangements are being managed.
Is CHC30121 invalid?
Superseded does not mean that a qualification properly issued under the previous national training product is automatically invalid. Students currently enrolled under CHC30121 should ask their provider for a written explanation of the transition and completion arrangements.
Is CHC30125 equivalent to CHC30121?
Training.gov.au records CHC30125 as superseding and being equivalent to CHC30121.
How many units are in CHC30125?
CHC30125 contains 17 units: 15 core units and 2 electives.
How much work placement does CHC30125 require?
At least 160 hours of work must be completed in a regulated children’s education and care service in Australia.
Can CHC30125 be completed fully online?

Do I need a Working with Children Check?
People working or volunteering in child-related work usually need the applicable state or territory clearance. In Victoria, confirm the Working with Children Check requirements with the provider and host service before placement.
Is CHC30125 available through Free TAFE in Victoria?
CHC30125 is currently marked as a Free TAFE course on the Victorian Skills Gateway. Personal eligibility, funded-place availability and additional costs still require provider confirmation.
